VOLUNTEERING IN ZANZIBAR 2016

Voluntair i Zanzibar

Volontär i Tanzania

Tanzania brochure 2016

Zanzibar located off the coast of Tanzania is a beautiful group of islands. Zanzibar is not a very big archipelago and Pemba is the most famous island here. Comfortably placed in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is surrounded by turquoise-blue water and breathtaking views everywhere. Rugged and Greyish Dhoni (small boats) with partially covered roof, would be your only ride in the deep wide beautiful ocean. The Zanzibar city on the other hand has European, Arabic and Indian influences not only in its design but also its food and culture. The famous “Stone Town” in the old quarter of the city is a World Heritage Site and very popular amongst the tourists. Other areas of interest for tourists include Beit el-Ajaib, Darajani Market, Beit el-Sahel, Hammami Persian Bath, Old fort and more...

Then there are the beaches. Blue and more blue water everywhere. You cannot just stop beach hopping and visit small fishing villages while at it. Rich in historical content, one cannot fail to observe the uncanny links to Zanzibar’s tumultuous past, taking us back to the era of slave trading and British hegemony. Of Course the on the brighter side, the “spice island” is now a major supplier of exotic spices.

Zanzibar is a Muslim country, early marriages are very common here, and hence the teen pregnancies. Health Care system of Zanzibar is not very bright and faces infrastructural and administrative challenges. There is lack of medical expertise and assisting medical staff to complete a procedure successfully. The patient doctor ratio is also a challenge.

Volunteering Solutions offers volunteers the possibility to assist in 2 hospitals in a variety of medical disciplines, for both students as qualified nurses and doctors. The following departments are available for volunteers:

  • Nurses
  • Doctors
  • Midwives
  • Physiotherapists

It will be a challenging experience to assist and work in a hospital that is understaffed, has limited resources and long queues of waiting patients. One of the challenges is that the hospital does not have its own sterilization facilities and everything needs to be sent to the main hospital to be sterilized.

Your role as a volunteer will be primarily to assist the medical staff on duty. This can differ depending on what level of expertise you have, and for students, will be different than for qualified nurses or doctors. Expect a challenge; that is why you are coming. Volunteers in the past have delivered babies, taken blood, changed dressings, assisted with minor surgery and other activities that you would possible not be involved in if you stayed back home. It can be challenging, so volunteers with a healthy doses of independence and flexibility will enjoy this experience of learning how healthcare works in Tanzania.

Volunteers, depending on their background and field of expertise, can assist in:

  • The maternity ward
  • The eye clinic
  • Dental department
  • Women, children and men wards for general health issues
  • Gynaecology department
  • Theatre for surgeries
  • Physiotherapy (3 physiotherapists work here)
  • First Aid department
  • Laboratory and research
  • X-ray facilities
  • Other departments

Living and Other Arrangements

Find a beautiful abode away from home in Zanzibar. Volunteering Solutions ensures that our volunteers get the “at home” atmosphere while volunteering.

Airport Receive/ Transfer

Volunteers are picked up from the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport located in the Unguja Island by the local coordinator or representative. Those coming via the sea route would be picked up from their docking station.

Orientation

All volunteers are given an orientation about their project and the location by the local coordinator. Areas like culture, greetings, locations, transportation, safety and volunteer placements are given during the orientation.

Accommodation

All participants are accommodated in the volunteer’s house, located outside Stone Town. Volunteers are provided shared rooms (same gender). The house is big with spacious living room, dining room as well as fully functional kitchen. There is big compound with trees and you can spend your time outside under the shade if you feel like it. Bedding is provided, but bring a towel for personal use. Mosquito nets are also provided, but you can bring your own nets of course. If you don’t have enough space in your suitcase; it is cheap to buy things locally.

The beach is within walking distance from the accommodation. You can relax, sunbathe and swim comfortably here. If not anything, then simply soak in the views.

For accessing internet:

  • You can visit an internet café in Stone Town
  • You can buy an internet stick to connect to your own laptop
  • Or you can buy data and use your cell phone for internet

Meals

Meals are provided 3 times a day by the cook. The Zanzibar cuisine includes meat, chicken, seafood and vegetarian dishes. There are several eating and dine out places near the accommodation.

During your Free Time

Volunteers will have a lot of free time during the weekend. During weekdays too, your evenings would be free. You can do a lot here:

  • Visit the old forts, museums and beautiful streets of Stone Town
  • Eat all the seafood you can at Forodhani Gardens in the evening
  • Go on a spice tour to see how cloves, nutmeg and much more are grown
  • Go swimming in crystal clear water
  • Snorkel or dive to some of the most beautiful reefs of the world.
  • Relax and live the island lifestyle!
